Upper Mustang

Mustang is becoming a more popular  trekking region in Nepal since the home Ministry of Nepal announced the opening of restricted areas in October 1991. However this region still remains a highly rstrictea area with strict controls over issueing  special entry permits in order to protect local traditions and the environment from outside influence. You will travel through the region of the Kaligandaki, from the Tibetan bordered cliffs and unique picturesque cillages enjoying wonderful panoramic views of Nilgri, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri on this memoralble journey.

Outline Itinerary of Upper Mustang

Day 01:
on arrival at Kathmandu airport you will be met and assisted at the airport by our representatives who will arrange your transfer and check in to your hotel. After time to rest and get refreshed enjoy the evening in the heard of Kathmandu.

Day 02: Kathmand and valley: After breakfast today  is an easy walking tour in Kathmandu s central numan Durbar Square including cisits to an ancient palace, livin goddess Kumark temple, Hanuman Dhoka and KastaMandap temple then we will continue on to Monkey temple(swoyambhnath Stupa)  which provides fine views of Kathmandu Valley.After Monkey temple we go to Bautha nath stupa which is one of  the largest stupa in Nepal. Baudha is also the center of Tibetan culture in Nepal and wonderful Vibrant, interesting community.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Pokhara:  Pokhara is the hip place to be and one of the best places to relax in Nepal and the starting point for many treks and adventure activities. Its an enchanting town of remarkable beauty and a laid back atmosphere, nestled in a lush tranquil valley on the shores of lake Phewa against a stunning backdrop of the Annapurna range and dominating presence of Machhapuchhare. After a late breakfast today we will drive through the beautiful Nepalese countryside to reach Pokhara.

Day 04: Pokhara to Jomsom to Kagbeni(2800m): Today we will  take the short flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, the district capital of Mustang and the most interesting town in the area and the Start point for our trek. We will have spectacular views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri Tukuche peak and Thampus peak en route. From Jomsom we will trek to Kagbeni, the entry point of the upper Mustang and where we will spend over night.

Day 05 Kagbeni to Chele(3060M): The trail follows along the east bank of the Kaligandaki  that climbs over numerous ridges as it heads north before it reaches Tangbe Village. The town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys amongst  white washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. Nilgiri peak, which dominates the southern skyline at kagbeni, looms massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond Tangbe we reach Chhsang Village and cross the river here. Continuing north and climbing up the trail. We will  reach a huge red mass of Conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. Our trek now leaves the Kaligandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to Chele at 3030m. Here the local culture changes from the Managi Culture to that of the Tibetans of Lo from this point on. Tonight we will camp here at chele.

Day 06: Chele to Geling(3510m): After breakfast today the climb counties through steep, treeless, waterless terrain, along the side of a spectacular steep canyon to a pass and rock cairn at 3540m. This is followed by a long gradual descent still dominated by niligri, are visible far to the south. From here we climb above Samar to a ridge and then descent into a large Gorge and to another Valley field before crossing  astream and climbing up to a ridge at 3800m. The route then climbs over yet another pass, follows a ridge and then descends to Shyangmochen. From this points its a gentle climb to a pass at 3770m and then a descent to Geling where we will stop for overnight.

Day 07 Geling – Charang(3620m) : From Geling the trail climbs gently up to the interesting pass of Nyi La and then descends below blue Grey and red Cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge across the Tangmor Chu River. We then climb past what is perhaps the longest and most spectacular stretch of Mani wall in Nepal before climbing over another pass at 3600m followed by a long gentle descent to Charang. The huge five storey white Dzong and red Gompa makes an interesting cisit and chance to view the collections of statues and Thankas as well as numerous paintings of  seated Bhddha.  We  will stay tonight and enjoy being here.

Day 08: Charang- Lo Manthang(3890m): Today the descends for about 100m from Charang, crosses the Charang-Chu and then climbs steeply via a rocky trails to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. Finally from a ridge at 3850m there is a view of the walled city of Lo. After a short descent we cross a stream before climbing uup to the Plateau of Lo Manghang  and where will spend next two days.

Day 09/10: Lo Manthang:  we will these two days exploring  Lo Manthang and the surrounding area. There are four major attractions in Lo as well as several other places to visit. The tall Champa Lakhang good house, the red thugchen Gompa, chyodi Gompa and the entrance hall are the main attractions of the town. Another interesting place is the four store building at the King Place as well as the surrounding panoramic views of the Himalayas. Besides the town of Lo Manghang there are tow other interesting nearby valleys well worth visiting. The western Tingkhar, site of the Kings summer palace, Kimlinng and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Nangyals, The Monastery of Victory, which is the newst and most active Gompa in Lo. The eastern calley contains chosar, the site of a high school and Garphu and Nyphu Gompa. This is also the main trading route to Lhasa. We will have plenty of time to explore the area, to relax and enjoy the views before we leave.

Day 11: Lo Monthang to Ghami(3490m) via Gekar: Today we follow the trails as it climbs steadily to a pass marked by a cairn offering a last glimpse of Lo Manghang. The trail contours past two small ridges and valleys before crossing a high ridge and descending southwards through two more Valleys, meadows and across a stream. We then make along rcocky sescent to Gekar. Lo Gkekar Gompa is older than samye Gompa in Tibet and is one of the oldest Gompas in Nepal. From here we cross a ridge after a little climbing and drop down steeply to Thamar village where the trail descends alongside the stone walls and fields of extensive Villages before climbing to a ridge. Its short descent from here to Ghami. On our arrival we spend overnight here.

Day 12: Ghami to Samar(3160m): From here we will climb to Nyi La and then descend to Samar via the out ward route. We will spend overnight at Samar.

Day 13: Samar to Kagbein(2800m): Today  we will continue our return trek to Kagbeni, our entry point for the Upper Mustang. We will stay at kagbeni tonight.

Day 14: Kagbeni to Jomsom(2750m): Today we will retrace our footsteps and follow the trail to reach to Jomsom where we will spend rest of the day and enjoy the evening before we take our return flight to Pokhara.

Day 15: Jomsom to Pokhara: We will catch an early flight to Pokhara today and on our arrival at Pokhara, we will be transfer to hotel at Pokhara and relax the rest of the day here.

Day16: Pokhara to  Kathmandu : we will take early flight to Kathmandu and  rest of the day you can have free for shopping and leisure or you also can go to Bhaktapur . If you decided to go to Bhakatpur  one of our tour guide will take you there.

Day 17 Depature: Today is free to relax until departure or to commence any additional trips  or activities you may have booked.  If departing you will be transferred to the International Airport in time for your rteurn flights home or onward Journey.
